"Jesuit activity in Dublin, right from the beginning, was fairly evenly split between the north side and the south side of the city," writes Eddie O'Donnell, author of The Jesuits in Dublin, a new book which tells the 400-year story of the order in the capital. In all, O'Donnell catalogues 54 buildings, starting with the first Jesuit base in Cooke Street, dating to 1598.
"If this work helps to dispel the false image that Jesuits are snobs who confine their ministry to the wealthy, it will have achieved something worthwhile," he writes. The photographs in the book are mainly from the famous Father Francis Browne collection.
