Arty Duo: This Thursday the Minister for Education, Micheal Martin, will introduce Beefie and Brains at Dublin's Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery. The two will give humorous tours to young people at the gallery this winter. Beefie and Brains are also featured in a video and a children's book, Picture This!, aimed at making art history accessible to young people. The video is co-funded by the Department, the European Social Fund and Dublin Corporation. The book by Daire O'Connell is available from the gallery at £4.95. The book and video cost £9.95.
Musical Ears: The Royal Irish Academy of Music begins a pre-instrumental class for children aged between four and eight next Monday. The new class is designed to develop basic music skills through singing, rhythm games, percussion playing, movement and an introduction to the instruments of the orchestra. Tiger Cubs: The Young Entrepreneurs Scheme 1997/ 98 has just been launched nationally. The scheme encourages young people by getting them to set up businesses. Last year 7,300 students from 250 schools took part and their products ranging from pillows and wood carvings to pots of honey were presented along with accounts and records at a function in O'Reilly Hall in UCD earlier this year. Going West: Baboro, a new international children's festival running in Galway for four days from Tuesday, October 14th, is to be an annual event aimed at young people from three to 16 years of age. It will include theatre performances from all over the world as well as workshops, readings, concerts and special events.
