Mexico's Zapatista uprising is the subject of a play being premiered at Trinity College Dublin this week. He Who Was Born Twice is based in part on writer-director Guylaine Klaus-Corsini's own time in the Chiapas region.
The Frenchwoman, an experienced actor, director and teacher in Europe, was arrested in Mexico when she first tried to have the play produced; she was accused of being a spy for Subcommandante Marcos.
Dublin audiences will only see one act of her five-act epic, which combines Mayan myth and legend with contemporary social and political issues. Translated by Julie O'Sullivan, it runs in the college's Ed Burke Theatre tonight through Thursday at 8 p.m.
