The University College of Cork students’ union has called for home owners to rent out rooms to students to alleviate student accommodation problems.

Pressures in the rental market, including landlords insisting on 12-month leases, had reduced available stock for students, a union spokesman said.

“It’s a great way for locals to help out students, while earning up to €12,000, tax free. Some students are really struggling to find somewhere to stay, so this could be a win-win for everyone,” said union president Aidan Coffey.

Mr Coffey said Cork did not have enough purpose-built student accommodation and more needed to be built.
