Guidance counsellors directing students towards a career in computers can access a new online "aptitude tool" for specific job descriptions and functions in eight different categories.

Located at www.microsoft.com/ skills2000/jobs.htm, the tool has just been launched by Microsoft Ireland. The site includes a series of questions to help people identify their aptitudes, plus information on technical training. The aim is to help people understand how to develop skills and knowledge in eight IT career categories, ranging from database administration to technical writing.

"Our goal is to reach out and bring new individuals into the computer industry," said Mark Keane, director of human resources for Microsoft Worldwide Product Group, Ireland. "Many people simply don't realise they may have the skills or an aptitude to succeed in this industry."
