Many arts graduates feel ill-equipped for the challenges facing them in a now global, competitive marketplace. This and other issues relating to the employability of artists in Ireland were discussed at a conference held in the DIT Rathmines, last week. As well as Patricia Quinn, director of the Arts Council, Patrick Mason, theatre director and Dr Ellen Hazelthorn of the DIT, the conference heard speakers from the Netherlands, Finland and Britain discuss work barriers facing arts graduates. The conference, one of four being held across Europe, looked at ways to bridge the gap between studying and working in the arts industry. A European action agenda for the employability of young artists will be drafted at the European round-up conference and presented to the European Commission.
