Five people died in weekend road collisions in the Republic and three in the North.
A father of three was critical in hospital last night after gardai found him under trees at the scene of a motorcycle crash in Co Cork, in which his friend died.
The survivor was named locally as Mr James Doyle (30), from Castleconnell, Co Limerick. A passing motorist discovered the body of his friend, Mr Anthony Hurley (25), a father of two, on the main Cork-Limerick Road at 3.30 a.m.
Mr Hurley was killed instantly when the men's motorcycle crashed into a telegraph pole at Rathgoggin, a mile on the Limerick side of Charleville.
His body was found about 60 feet from the motorcycle.
Members of Charleville Fire Brigade had to cut away some of the trees under which Mr Doyle was found to allow a doctor attend him. He was taken to Mallow General Hospital and later to Cork University Hospital, where he was described as "critical".
An 18-year-old woman died in Limerick Regional Hospital last night after the car she was driving collided with a crash barrier early yesterday on the Limerick-Tralee Road, three miles from Abbey feale. Three passengers were also injured, none seriously.
There were three fatal collisions on Saturday. A 24-year-old Co Carlow man died when his car hit a wall on the Ardattin-Clonegal road about five miles from his home. He was Mr Kyran O'Byrne, of Rathoe, Carlow.
Mr Keith Hayes (19), of Churchill, Ballinasloe, died after a twocar collision at Tynagh Road, Portumna, Co Galway. He captained last year's county minor hurling team.
Mr Ian Kennedy (27), from Lavistown, Co Kilkenny, died when the car in which he was travelling struck a tree at Poulavalla, Cahir, Co Tipperary.
Three people died on the roads in the North. Mr Nigel Gorman, aged 30, from Meeting House Avenue, Maghera, had been walking along the dual carriageway between Antrim and Ballymena when he was struck by a car.
A man in his 20s died in hospital after his car hit a concrete pillar on the Belfast by-pass in Comber, Co Down. A 17-year-old was killed in a collision near the border in Co Fermanagh. The car in which he was travelling struck a lorry on the main Swanlinbar road.
