Eight people were hospitalised today following an oil spill on a 66 kilometre stretch of the N24 Limerick to Waterford road and the N76 which runs between Clonmel and Kilkenny.
The oil leaked from a truck at about 8.30 am this morning and the areas affected are from Bansha in Co. Tipperary to Callan in Co. Kilkenny. Gardai are seeking information in relation to the truck involved.
A number of traffic accidents occured as a result of the spillage although none of the injuries suffered by motorists and passengers are believed to be life-threatening.
South Tipperary Council, Kilkenny County Council, Gardai and the local Fire Service responded to the incident and traffic restrictions are still in place. Council staff have completed the gritting of the road but motorists are still advised to drive with caution particularly on roundabouts and bends.
