Eight people were injured today when an Austrian passanger jet made an emergency landing in heavy snow in a field near Munich airport after the pilot reported engine problems, police said.

The Fokker 70 plane belonging to Austrian Airlines was carrying around 28 passangers and four crew from Vienna. It landed two kilometres short of Munich airport on a snow-covered field near the town of Reisen, police said.

Police said in a statement that eight people were slightly injured during the emergency landing and were treated in hospital and at the airport medical centre.

Police said the pilot had reported engine problems to the Munich tower shortly before the landing which was eased by the thick snow that helped the plane slide to a halt.
