A fire in an apartment block in Berlin overnight killed eight people, four of them children.
The fire broke out in the stairwell of the five-storey building in the German capital's central Moabit district; the cause was not immediately clear.
A fire brigade spokesman said the death toll was the second highest in a fire in Berlin since World War II.
Eight people were taken to hospital and 43 others were treated at the scene after inhaling smoke from the fire.
