Eileen Bell (58) is one of Alliance's most high profile politicians. She was appointed the party's deputy leader last month. Previously she held the positions of chairwoman, general secretary and president.
A Catholic from the Falls Road in west Belfast, she is married to a Protestant. The couple were intimidated twice from their home in Belfast by loyalist paramilitaries and now live in Bangor, Co Down.
Ms Bell has been a member of the Alliance Party for over 20 years. She is its spokeswoman on equality and community relations. She is an Assembly member for North Down and a close friend of Agriculture Minister, Ms Brid Rodgers. She has been involved in a wide range of peace and community groups.
