Eircom has revealed pre-tax profits of €77 million for the three months to the end of June 2005.

Revenue was marginally lower at €399 million, and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation fell by around 3 per cent to €149 million. The company blamed the slump on the need to cut prices and offer discounts in a bid to promote sales of broadband and other packages.

Eircom revealed it is attracting around 2,000 broadband customers each week, with 156,000 clients signed up for the high-speed internet service. Eircom is aiming to bring in at least 500,000 broadband users by December 2007.

Staff numbers have also fallen, with almost 700 workers leaving during the last financial year. The company is aiming to have 7,000 employees by March 2008.
