Gardai are investigating the deaths of an elderly couple whose bodies were discovered in a field behind their home in Co Cavan. Foul play is not suspected in the deaths of the husband, aged 75, and wife, aged 73, who were found shortly before 6 p.m. yesterday in Portacliffe just outside Killeshandra. Post-mortem examinations are to be carried out today.
According to a Garda spokesman, so far "there is nothing to suggest their deaths were suspicious". He said the scene has been preserved because it was so unusual for two people to die together.
Gardai were notified after friends who called to the house raised the alarm. Details of the deaths were released only late last night and the couple's names have not been released until their family has been informed.
