The Archbishop of Cashel and Emly, Dr Dermot Clifford, has agreed to a request from an elderly priest to remove him from parochial duties pending an investigation into unspecified allegations relating to a period of time the priest spent in the United States.

Dr Clifford informed parishioners in the parish where the priest had served for over a decade of his decision at Mass on Thursday night. The parish is located in north Tipperary.

It is understood the allegation against the priest was first made to Church authorities in the US and dates from 30 years ago. It is thought to involve a then four-year-old male. Following the complaint, it was decided that the priest should step aside from his parish duties until the investigation is completed.

However, Church authorities stressed yesterday that this is not an indication that the priest is guilty of any wrongdoing.
