A roundup of the rest of the day's election news
SMITH SELECTED
Minister for Agriculture and Food Brendan Smith was last night unanimously selected as a Fianna Fáil candidate for the five-seat Cavan Monaghan constituency, with outgoing deputy Margaret Conlon.
The party has held a third seat in the constituency during the present Government term, with former Ceann Comhairle Dr Rory O’Hanlon, who is now retiring, but it was decided at last night’s party convention in Cootehill, Co Cavan, that only the two outgoing Fianna Fáil candidates will go forward.
Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan, who chaired the convention, said he was delighted by the large turnout of 400 delegates.
