Roger Doyle: Fairlight Memories (Silver Door Records)

Long ago, Doyle made truly weird pop with Olwen Fouere, such as the chilly Look at Me or Spring is Coming with a Flower in Its Mouth. The latter's original appears on this reissue of Contents of the Payjar, a pun on Page R, the sequencer in Doyle's computerised Fairlight, on which he made his unmistakably discordant, jewelly, chewy music, with various timbres spiderwalking around contrapuntally. Also here is Operating Theatre's 1984 take on Lorca's The Love of Don Perlimplin and Belisa in the Garden starring Thom McGinty, and Eliza Lopez who keens Spanish folk modes here over Doyle's spikey, swampy progressions which, after all these years, still mangle my head with their wilful, oft-unfathomable eccentricity.
