Eleven people were believed to have been killed and at least 30 injured when a train derailed outside Cape Town, officials said today.
Metro rail spokesman Mr Wayne Smith said 11 people were killed when five coaches derailed near Stellenbosch, about 50 kilometres northeast of the city.
He said the cause was unknown, but "that a goods train was also involved and that a collision could not be excluded" in the accident which happened at around 4:00 p.m. local time (2 p.m. Irish time), when commuters were returning home from work.
