It was sudden death down Muirfield's famous 18th hole and Levet's hopes appeared to have crumbled as he sent his drive into a fairway bunker.

But Els sent his approach into a tight greenside bunker and needed a magnificent recovery shot to three feet to set up the winning putt.

Els had led by two strokes after the third round but could only manage a one-under 70. Both Elkington and Levet closed with 66's while Appleby carded a 65.

It was a third win in a Major for the 32-year-old Els after his two US Open triumphs in 1994 and 1997.

He twice previously finished runner-up at the British Open in 1996 and 2000.
