The story of some 650 Irish citizens who became prisoners of the Japanese in the second World War was described as a “litany of horrors” last night, writes Genevieve Carbery.

President of the Irish branch of the Royal British Legion, retired Maj Gen David O’Morchoe, was speaking at the launch of The Emperor’s Irish Slaves, by Robert Widders, at Trinity College Dublin. The book “highlights the brutality” of the Japanese army’s treatment of those serving in the British armed forces, Maj Gen O’Morchoe said. The volume is published by the History Press Ireland at a recommended retail price of €14.99.
