Newcastle began their quest for a place in the UEFA Cup in impressive style tonight with a comfortable win over Sporting Lokeren in Belgium.

A first Newcastle goal for Wayne Quinn and two Shola Ameobi strikes provided Bobby Robson's men with a comfortable three-goal advantage at half-time in the first leg of their Intertoto Cup quarter-final clash. Striker Lomano Lua Lua, on as a second-half substitute, sealed the win with a stunning overhead kick in the 86th minute.

Newcastle, without established first-team regulars such as Alan Shearer, Carl Cort, Kieron Dyer and Robert Lee, produced a dominant display with 6million new boy Craig Bellamy taking centre stage in their absence. -PA
