If you are a regular traveller between Dublin and Cork and have developed a dislike for Abbeyleix in recent months because of the traffic problems there, relax.

You are invited to a special Christmas/millennium party in December to mark the ending of the disruption in the Co Laois town caused by a £2 million facelift.

Since this facelift of the heritage town began some months ago, Abbeyleix has developed the kind of profile Kinnegad in Co Westmeath used to have before it passed the mantle to Moate.

AA Roadwatch has been warning motorists for most of the summer to try to avoid the picturesque town, which unfortunately straddles the main road between Cork and Dublin.

There have been mutterings from locals and business people in Abbeyleix that they were under siege and were getting a bad name nationally.

Now, according to local councillor Mr John Bonham, the bad times are almost at an end and the county council will be funding a party for those who want to attend.

"I know it has been very bad for travellers between the two main cities, but the end is in sight," Mr Bonham said during the week.

"But the job had to be done because of the damage which had already been caused to the streets by the heavy throughput of traffic," he said.

"When the job was being done it was decided that the ESB lines, telephone lines and all the services should be put underground to enhance the image of Abbeyleix as a heritage town," he said.

"This naturally caused a bit of delay, but it will be worth it in the end, and we will end up with one of the nicest towns in the country.

"It has also meant that we have had to cut down the lime trees which used to line the street, but they had to be taken down anyway because they were rotten in the centre," he said.

"All those trees are going to be replaced, and the only overground services will be old-style lighting standards which are costing £3,200 each."

The councillor said the party was planned for December, and the hope was that those travelling at Christmas would not be delayed in Abbeyleix.
