Cricket: India paceman Irfan Pathan grabbed three wickets to leave injury-depleted England struggling at 246-7 at the end of day one of the first test.

The left-arm bowler struck two late blows after a polished 60 from debutant opening batsman Alastair Cook had given the tourists an encouraging start.

All rounder Paul Collingwood was 53 not out, his third successive test 50, holding one end up at stumps with tailender Matthew Hoggard yet to score.

Captain Andrew Flintoff contributed a sensible 43 after winning the toss and electing to bat but England's batsmen failed to master a slow pitch to lose wickets at regular intervals.

Flintoff was deputising for injured captain Michael Vaughan, who returned home due to a knee injury. Vice captain Marcus Trescothick has also gone, for personal reasons.

Pathan finished with three for 52 while debutant paceman Shantakumaran Sreesanth took two for 56 after bowling a lively spell on the spin-friendly Nagpur pitch. England are aiming to win their first test series in India for 21 years.
