England's batsmen once again hit early trouble as openers Marcus Trescothick and Matthew Prior both went cheaply to the new ball in the final one-day international against Pakistan at the Pindi Stadium.
With the series already gone after defeat at this same venue two days ago, England were playing for pride - and International Cricket Council ranking points.
Trescothick was able to salvage none of the former as he continued his run of low scores, making only a single today to take his tally for this five-match contest to just 75, in an England innings which was to muster only 46 for two in the first 15 overs.
The captain, who had won the toss and chosen to bat first, became debutant Mohammad Asif's maiden victim at this level when he played on via an indeterminate, end-of-term push-drive which lacked noticeable foot movement.
Asif, who took 10 wickets against England in last month's three-day warm-up match in Lahore and was recently signed by Leicestershire for next season, soon followed up by getting rid of Prior, who toppled over a little as he tried to clip one off his legs but instead chipped a head-high catch to midwicket.
Andrew Strauss and Vikram Solanki were therefore brought together on 21 for two in the sixth over and, on a next-door surface displaying a suspicion of the stodgy characteristics which prevailed on Monday, they at least saw off Asif and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan's first spells.
