A councillor in Co Clare has started a fundraising campaign to buy a defibrillator for Ennis town centre because the local authority has refused to do so.
Ennis Town Council member Paul O’Shea (Labour) proposed that the authority install a cardiac defibrillator in the town centre. He suggested that the unit be placed in O’Connell Square, within view of a Garda CCTV camera, with a notice warning of a €1,000 fine for improper use.
However, the council has told Mr O’Shea that the provision of a defibrillator in such circumstances is not within its remit.
