A section of the proposed £72 million Ennis bypass faces opposition from one of the local authorities which initially sanctioned the route.

Members of Ennis Urban District Council have formally proposed a motion lodging an objection to the Minister for the Environment and Local Government, Mr Dempsey, over a section of the western relief road of the bypass traversing an amenity area in Ennis known as the Rocky Road.

The action by the councillors has been described as a "very, very serious issue" by county engineer, Mr Tom Carey, and the council is to hold a special meeting tonight.
