Access to the countryside

Sir, – I entirely agree with Roger Garland (Letters, April 14th) with regard to access to the countryside. We have some of the most attractive scenery in Europe, but the most restrictive access. This is entirely due to farmers and landowners who have fought tooth and nail down the years to prevent such access.

More than 70 per cent of agricultural income is derived from handouts from taxpayers at national and EU level, yet those same taxpayers have little right of access to see their own country.

I lived for many years in Sussex, where they also have gorgeous scenery, and it is said you can walk across southern England without touching tarmac. It’s long past time that citizens demanded action from the Government, both for themselves and for the very important tourist industry. Yours, etc,

JAMES MORAN,
