Deadline for property tax compliance passes

People who have not paid the charge now face penalties of up to 8 per cent annually

The property tax compliance rate for 2014 stood at about 88 per cent in late March.

A total of €157 million in local property tax was collected by Revenue last month as the deadline for paying the tax approached.

Homeowners yet to pay the tax or the household charge will now face interest at a rate of 0.0219 per cent per day (or 8 per cent a year) from the date on which payment was due.

The deadline for property tax payment passed yesterday (Wed) at 5pm, having been extended from Monday. Property owners have the choice of paying the tax on a once off basis or by monthly direct debit.

Exchequer returns published yesterday (wed) showed local property tax receipts amounted to €214 million for the first quarter, with more than 73 per cent of this (€157 million) collected in March.

A helpline received 14,000 calls during yesterday, the spokeswoman added.

Statistics on compliance and the total amount collected would be issued once any outstanding correspondence with property owners was complete, she added.

The tax applied on a half-year basis in 2013 and had a reported compliance rate of 93 per cent, while generating €242 million.
