Films and photos alert
Young photographers and film-makers have 20 days left to get their entries into Eco-Unesco’s summer film and photography competition. Held to celebrate the UN International Year of Biodiversity, the theme of the competition is simply nature. For full details of how to take part, see the events section of ecounesco.ie or call 01-6625491. Prizes include a masterclass in wildlife documentary-making. All entries will be displayed in a multimedia exhibition at the Greenhouse, 17 St Andrew’s St, Dublin, in the run-up to Eco-unesco’s National Youth Eco-Forum 2010, which will explore biodiversity.
Towns in transition
The supply of and demand for local goods and services is at the heart of the Transition Towns movement which was started by permaculture teacher Rob Hopkins (left) in Kinsale, Co Cork. Their plans have since become a model for more than 100 towns and cities around the world. Now, TT organisers will get together for the first all-Ireland weekend conference from August 13 to August 15 in Gurteen Agricultural College in Tipperary. Groups will discuss a low-energy, community- based future. See transition2010gathering. info or transitionnetwork.org
