The May bank holiday rain is set to continue into next week although temperatures are expected to rise slowly in the coming days.
Met Éireann has forecast dry and sunny conditions for Monday, but cloud is expected to build up during the day leading to outbreaks of heavy rain by evening. Temperatures will drop to a minimum of 4 degrees with misty conditions through the night.
Tuesday will be a wet day with rain continuing throughout the afternoon in the north and northwest of the country. However, the rain is expected to clear from the southwest during the day with temperatures reaching 14 degrees.
Wednesday will be a mild and rainy day with temperatures again reaching 14 degrees. Skies will clear on Wednesday night and temperatures are expected to drop to freezing.
Skies will clear later in the week with Thursday set to be “the best day of the week countrywide”, according to Met Éireann. Thursday will be mainly dry with sunny spells and isolated showers and temperatures will reach 13 degrees.
