Weekly forecast predicts below-freezing temperatures

Met Éireann: Cold snap for early in the week, with milder breaks on Thursday and Friday

It is chilly out there and according to Met Eireann, we haven’t seen the last of the cold, with overnight temperatures likely to dip below freezing this week.

AA Roadwatch reported below freezing temperatures on a number of routes and is advising that motorists slow down and drive with extra care.

According to the National Forecast, Monday is set to begin cold, with frost and icy patches in most areas. This will clear as the day goes on, with highest temperatures predicted between 7 and 11 degrees Celsius.

Monday night will be calmer, with little or no wind. Fog patches are likely and parts of the northwest, west and some parts of Munster may experience below-freezing temperatures overnight.

Tuesday will begin with showers in coastal areas. The rain should clear up, with highest temperatures set to be between 5 and 8 degrees, dropping to below freezing in most parts again overnight.

Wednesday will be slow to clear and some midland areas will remain below 5 degrees Celsius. Sunnier spells are predicted towards coastal areas and temperatures will typically be around 8 degrees in the afternoon.

Southerly winds will bring rain to the Atlantic coastline on Thursday, with fairer weather predicted in the east. A milder night is likely.

Friday is set to be mild and breezy again, with rain in the south and west.

Unsettled weather and freezing temperatures should return again for the weekend.
