A public seminar to discuss the use of genetically-modified plants, organisms and foodstuffs has been organised by the Environmental Protection Agency, which oversees such research activities in the State.

The EPA is currently assessing a request from Monsanto to plant genetically-modified sugar beet in outdoor trials in Munster. A licence must be issued before these modified plants can be set. Over 200 objections against the plan have been lodged with the EPA, which must reach a decision before June.

"All sides in the debate will have the opportunity to express their view at the forthcoming seminar," the EPA said. The seminar will take place in June but the date and venue have yet to be decided.
