The Philippine government ombudsman announced today his office would file eight criminal charges against ousted president Mr Joseph Estrada, including a plunder case punishable by death.

Ombudsman Mr Aniano Desierto told reporters that besides plunder, his office would also file bribery and corruption charges against the disgraced former movie actor, who was ousted in a people power revolt in January.

Mr Estrada has denied any wrongdoing.

Desierto said the charges would be filed later today before the Sandiganbayan antigraft court, the body empowered to try officials accused of corruption. The graft court must still decide whether Mr Estrada has a case to answer.
