Barcelona - A local council member for Spain's ruling Popular Party died after a car-bomb attack in a Barcelona suburb yesterday, the Spanish Prime Minister, Mr Jose Maria Aznar, said yesterday.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but government officials blamed the attack on the Basque separatist organisation ETA, which has already killed a total of 21 people in Spain this year, four of them members of the Popular Party. The victim, who had been hospitalised with critical injuries, was named as Francisco Cano Consuegra (50), a councillor for the nearby town of Viladecavalls and a plumber by profession.
