Madrid - A Spanish military doctor was shot dead last night in the Andalucian capital of Seville, Jane Walker reports.

Col Antonio Munoz Carinanos (58) died instantly after two gunmen, almost certainly members of the Basque separatist movement ETA, burst into his private practice surgery in the centre of the city and fired two shots into his head.

As the assassins ran from the scene police opened fire and detained one of the men, identified as Jon Igor Solar Matarron, who is believed to have been a member of ETA for the past 10 years. The second gunman, who was hit in the shoulder, escaped to hide out in a nearby building site. Named as Zigor Merodio Larrano, police refused to confirm that he had been detained.

Both men are alleged to have been involved in the murder last week of Mr Luis Portero, the chief prosecutor for Andalucia, shot dead outside his home in Grenada.
