Algiers - Ethiopia announced yesterday that its forces were still in Eritrea and it would pull them out only after receiving international guarantees that Eritrea would not attack it in future.

The Ethiopian Foreign Minister, Mr Haile Woldensae, said: "Ethiopia is still committed to go back to its position of May 6th, 1998. But what we are calling for is that the international community gives us guarantees that Eritrea will not repeat its madness of invading neighbours."

Mr Haile was speaking after talks with the Sudanese Foreign Minister, Mr Mustafa Osman Ismail, who earlier met the Eritrean Foreign Minister, Mr Seyoum Mesfin.

Envoys from the US and the EU are also taking part in the talks.
