The European Commission has decided to ban imports of live birds and other poultry products from Croatia.
"The decision . . . was taken in response to a case of H5 avian influenza virus found in wild birds in Croatia," the commission said in a statement. "Tests are ongoing to confirm the exact strain of the virus."
Discovery of the H5 subtype of the bird flu virus does not necessarily indicate the presence of the H5N1 strain, which can be deadly to humans.
