BRUSSELS - The EU yesterday boasted that it was among the leading medal winners at the Atlanta Olympics.
"EU up front", the EU's statistical office Eurostat said in a statement, arguing that the EU finished ahead of Russia, the US, Japan, China and Canada with a total of 75 gold medals or 2.02 per 10 million inhabitants. Australia, which won five gold medals per 10 million people to top Eurostat's table, also beat the EU in the global medals count with 22.78 against 6.16 per 10 million.
