Romanian political turmoil, which could trigger early elections, is a cause for concern in view of the country's plan to join the European Union in 2007, EU's Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn said today.
"My duty as enlargement commissioner is to express concern over the political situation (in Romania)," Rehn told a news briefing after talks with Romanian Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu.
"For the moment the first and foremost priority of Romania is to prepare for the membership and especially as regards the implementation of the necessary reforms of the judicary and the fight against corruoption," he said.
