The Taoiseach is being undemocratic in supporting the continuing ratification of the EU constitution, according to the Peace and Neutrality Alliance.

Speaking at a Peace and Neutrality Alliance press conference, chairman Roger Cole said the EU constitution was now dead:

"The French and Dutch people have driven stakes through its heart and any attempt to keep it alive is a demonstration of lack of respect for their democracy.

"It is also undemocratic for the Taoiseach to go ahead and spend €5 million on a referendum, when the money is so badly needed in other areas, for example the health service," Mr Cole added.

Caroline Lucas, a Green MEP from England, called for grassroots consultation on the future of Europe. She said the No voters in France and The Netherlands recognised that "Europe needs to change."

She said: "I think people recognised that the EU constitution takes power away from people and moves Europe away from the principles of social justice and peace.

"It gives more power to Brussels and takes it away from the nation states."
