Tomorrow: 9.15 p.m. - Stars of the Sea, fireworks spectacular, by French pyrotechnic team Groupe F, Sandymount Strand, Dublin.

Saturday: 0.01 a.m. - The 10 accession states (Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, and Cyprus and Malta) legally become members of the EU.

11.30 a.m. - Meeting in Dublin Castle of the "three presidents", the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, in his capacity as President of the European Council (the group of EU member-state heads of government that governs the Union), Mr Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission (which carries out the Council's wishes) and Mr Pat Cox, President of the European Parliament (which has some oversight powers, vetting the Council and the Commission).

Noon-8 p.m. - European Fair at Merrion Square, Dublin, featuring food, craft, tourism, technology and culture from expanded EU. Up to 100,000 visitors expected. Highlights include a 35-strong Dutch guild who will "re-enact" Rembrandt's masterpiece, The Nightwatch.

Musical entertainment ranges from Kila and Sharon Shannon to folk musicians and dancers from Poland (which joins the EU.on Saturday), Bulgaria (which hopes to join around 2007), Finland and Germany (both member-states).

12.30 p.m. - Mr Ahern to start welcoming heads of state to Áras an Uachtaráin, the President's residence in the Phoenix Park, Dublin.

5.30 p.m. - Official enlargement ceremony, including flag raising at the Áras, to mark the accession of the 10.

6.30 p.m. - Heads of state dinner at Farmleigh House, the Government guest house in the Phoenix Park.
