The East Timor Ireland Solidarity Campaign has called on the Tanaiste for help following claims that the Indonesian military is engaged in a new offensive to wipe out remaining resistance fighters.

The organisation wants the EU to send a monitoring team to the region to investigate human right abuses.

Mr Tom Hyland, co ordinator of the campaign, said: "With this latest offensive, Indonesia has once again snubbed all who are attempting to find an internationally acceptable solution to the conflict in East Timor."

Recently, many Timorese had gone to the Indonesian capital of Jakarta to taken refuge in foreign embassies.
