Strasbourg - The European Parliament yesterday awarded its Sakharov human rights prize to Kosovo's ethnic Albanian leader, Mr Ibrahim Rugova, for his peaceful opposition to the Yugoslav province's Serbian rule.
Mr Rugova said the award served not only as a personal tribute but also as a tribute to the population of the province, where Albanians outnumber Serbs by nine to one. He said it was "a credit for our peaceful resistance and our sacrifices".
