The European Commission proposed today the harmonisation of laws across the European Union dealing with cybercrimes, including hacking, viruses and denial-of-service attacks.

The legislation, subject to approval by EU member states, aims to close "significant gaps" between national laws that could make it hard for police to go after individuals who attack computer systems, it said.

"Given the transnational nature of hacking, virus and denial of service attacks, it is important that the EU take action in this area," EU Justice and Home Affairs Commissioner Mr Antonio Vitorino said.

Lawyers following the issue have said companies are likely to benefit from the initiative, which responds to strategic plans set out at EU summits since 2000 to promote technological progress in Europe.
