The European Union today blamed the United States for the collapse of talks over subsidies for aircraft rivals Boeing and Airbus, but said it was willing to resume the negotiations.

Washington accused the EU yesterday of blocking the talks and threatened to take the matter back to the World Trade Organization, where the EU and the United States had had competing cases against each other.

"I regret this unilateral action in breaking off the negotiations. It is premature and unnecessary," EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson said in a statement.

"I fully understand the difficulties but I think we could have overcome them with further efforts.

"I am happy to return to the negotiating table, and perhaps the new US trade representative will look at that," he added.
