Berlin - The driver of a money transporter and an accomplice have stolen euro banknotes with a value of £940,000, the first major theft since deliveries of the new currency began last weekend, reports Derek Scally.

As well as the euro banknotes, the two men escaped with deutschmarks worth £128,000 and other currencies, according to security firm Securicor. The robbery happened on Thursday evening just after 11 p.m. in the town of Giessen, north of Frankfurt, when the 35 year-old driver of a Securicor van and an accomplice disarmed the co-driver and then tied him up.
