EU: Eurosceptic activists across the EU said yesterday that the results of the European elections, in which just 45 per cent of voters participated, reflected dissatisfaction with the EU and a "growing movement to reject the EU constitution".

EU heads of government due to meet in Brussels tomorrow would have to take into account the feelings of their respective electorates, including "the demand for a referendum on the EU constitution", said Mr John Boyd, co-ordinator of TEAM, an alliance of EU-critical groups and information network in 23 countries across Europe.

If, as a result of decisions taken at the Inter-Governmental Conference (IGC), EU leaders continued "pushing the EU constitution through", then it would be an act "little short of arrogance for which electorates will extract a heavy price", TEAM said in a statement. The statement was circulated in Ireland by Mr Anthony Coughlan, a long-standing critic of the EU.

If the IGC stalls again, there would appear to be little chance of agreement in the near future. Either way, this IGC following the votes cast and a fresh political situation after the European Parliament election could spell the beginning of the end for the EU superstate, said the statement.
