The European Commission has threatened to bring Ireland to the Court of Justice for its failure to comply with court rulings regarding the transport of dangerous goods by road.
The Commission decided to issue a letter of formal notice to Ireland today. As a result the Government may end up in court with the Commission seeking a daily penalty payment from the State from the date of the first Court ruling.
Ireland has already been convicted twice in relation to the transportation of dangerous goods by road and there are currently two Court cases pending concerning the transport of dangerous goods by rail.
Ireland is still in the process of developing new measures for these directives.
