Irish round-up: Scott Evans, Ireland's sole representative in the men's badminton singles at the Beijing Games, was beaten in the first round of competition by Germany's Marc Zwiebler in a thrilling clash.
The German took the first game 21-18, but Evans hit back to level the match by the same score.
Evans opened up a three-point lead three times in the deciding game but was unable to hold on to it and Zwiebler eventually prevailed 21-19 to move into the last 32.
And Irish interest in the fencing is also over after Siobhan Byrne was knocked out in the first round of the Women's Individual Sabre, beaten 15-8 by Poland's Irena Wieckowska.
There was better news for Chloe Magee in the evening badminton session, the Donegal native overcoming Kati Tolmoff of Estonia 2-1 in another nip-and-tuck encounter
Having lost the first set 18-21, the 19-year-old Irish champion fought back to take the match 21-18, 21-19 and set up a meeting with Jaeyoun Jun of Korea.
The Irish Equestrian team, meanwhile, have work to do in the eventing having failed to sparkle in the Dressage.
Austin O'Connor placed 15th in the individual standings with Geoffrey Curran 22nd to leave Ireland eighth in the team event.

Later this morning boxer Kenny Egan gets his campaign underway against Julius Jackson in the light-heavyweight division (8.30am) while the men's heavyweight four rowers are also in action (10.50am).
