Roy Evans was today installed as director of football at Second Division Swindon Town.
The former Liverpool manager was unveiled at a County Ground press conference this afternoon following the departure of Andy King on Wednesday.
Evans has been tipped for top jobs on numerous occasions since he stood down from his position as joint Liverpool manager in November 1998 to leave Gerard Houllier in sole charge at Anfield.
But apart from a stint as assistant manager to Karl-Heinz Riedle at Fulham in March 2000 following the sacking of Paul Bracewell - he left at the end of that season when current boss Jean Tigana was appointed - Evans has had to satisfy himself with the occasional slot on television as a pundit.
The former England schoolboy joined Liverpool as an apprentice in 1965, but made only 11 first team appearances over the next five years and in 1974 he became the youngest member of the Anfield boot room following the shock resignation of Bill Shankly.
After working his way through the ranks as reserve team coach, senior coach and then assistant manager in 1993, he became manager in his own right when Graeme Souness resigned in January 1994.
But although Evans guided Liverpool to Coca-Cola Cup success in 1995 he struggled to elevate the Reds back to the top of the English game and when Frenchman Houllier was appointed as joint-manager in July 1998 the writing was on the wall.
