The father of a US soldier who died in the Iraqi ambush that turned Jessica Lynch into a national heroine has criticised her for signing a million-dollar book deal.

Mr Randy Kiehl said the book, which is due out in November, will taint the memory of the soldiers killed in the attack.

He told a TV station in Comfort, Texas: "Pretty severe, isn't it? That she makes money off the death of my son and off the deaths of so many others."

His son, Specialist James Kiehl, was among seven members of the 507th Maintenance Company killed in the March ambush. Pte Lynch survived the attack and was taken prisoner of war. She was later rescued from a hospital.

This week a publisher announced Ms Lynch signed a deal to tell the story of her capture and rescue.

Mr Kiehl said: "Where's the million dollar book deal for the other members of the 507th who were killed? How do they tell their story? Now, she's a profiteer because what she did was in the line of duty."

He said he plans to read I Am a Soldier, Too: The Jessica Lynch Story,co-written by Pulitzer Prize winner Rick Bragg, to find out what it says about his son.
